Current Internship Opportunities

Mental Health America is always accepting applications from prospective interns throughout the semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer). No relocation, transit, or housing costs will be provided. All interns will be expected to work at least 10-15 hours per week. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to the jobs@mentalhealthamerica.net. Please reference the internship title in the subject line of the e-mail. All applicants should include in their cover letter which educational institute they are currently attending, why they are interested in Mental Health America, and why they are interested in the particular internship to which they are applying. 


Health Policy Intern
Mental Health America is currently seeking a Health Policy Intern for the spring semester at its office in Alexandria, VA.  The Health Policy Intern will conduct background research on state Medicaid programs across the country. Other projects and opportunities will be assigned as necessary. The intern is expected to work 15-20 hours a week and would start in early January. This is a paid position with a rate of $15/hour.

Ideal candidates are graduate-level students studying public health, public policy, social work, or a related policy/health field. Undergraduate candidates will only be considered if they demonstrate a strong grasp of public health issues. Knowledge about public health issues is required. Knowledge about mental health and Medicaid is preferred. Candidates must be comfortable conducting telephone interviews and using a computer.

Development Intern
Located in Alexandria, Virginia, Mental Health America seeks an energetic development intern to assist with special projects and day-to-day operations. Ideal candidates will have an interest in non-profits and fundraising. The internship will entail building donor relations, assisting with gift entry, mailings, and conducting internet research as needed. Special projects include development of online fundraising activities and foundation and major gift research.  Candidates must be MS Office proficient and have strong internet research skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a professional phone presence, are desired.  Interested applicants should send their cover letter and resume to jobs@mentalhealthamerica.net. Sales and Marketing Intern
Interested in gaining experience in the field of marketing? Mental Health America is in search of a motivated intern. The intern will assist with the promotion of publications and programming. This is a great opportunity to gain substantive real-world experience to build awareness, identify markets in which to promote MHAs books, brochures, and other store materials, expand customer database, increase strategic partnerships with university public relations departments, and conduct internet market research.

Candidates should be college students or recent graduates preferably in Marketing/Advertisement or Business Management. Candidates must also have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently as well as with a team, be extremely detail oriented with precise results, and show discretion, maturity and composure. Experience or interest in working in a healthcare or nonprofit setting preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the Internet required.
