In Tribute to Wayne S. Fenton, M.D.

Wayne S. Fenton, M.D.Mental Health America mourns the tragic loss of Dr. Fenton with his family, NIMH colleagues and the country, and honors him for his contributions to the science of mental illness and the lives of the one in five Americans affected by mental health problems.

His heroic work to bring better understanding of and treatments for schizophrenia – one of the most debilitating illnesses known to man – made a real difference in the lives of millions of individuals and families in the United States and worldwide. In his groundbreaking research and leadership, Dr. Fenton advanced the reality of recovery and a productive life in the community for people with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. Since schizophrenia often strikes people in their critical teen years, Dr. Fenton knew the great potential for positive futures that could be unlocked by science and services.
